-The shift lead knew what was up, so it wasn't as if they had to ask what was going on. May didn't want there to be many surprises, plus it wasn't like Freya was the first woman to wind up in her booth. Even so, she'd probably have a little trouble recognizing May at first...
Her hair was up, bounced into the true hostess style with plenty of volume to cascade over the bun, a rather simple but cute (if a bit small) red dress to go with it. Hey, her options in orange were limited. More make-up than she ever wore otherwise. If not for their familiarity, she'd probably seem like an entirely different girl.-
Hey there. You can't tell me you aren't at least a little jealous that I get the drink on the clock at a place like this, yeah?
[Freya glances up with a smile, arching an eyebrow. It's not a look she'd ever expected to see on May, that's for sure, but it wasn't a bad one.] Give me more credit. I'm jealous of anyone that doesn't have to work days at a time. Drinking's just the bonus. Been busy?
Yeah... Between Sakura being out most of the month, and just trying to learn how to fly the Mayship, and... -May sighed, shaking her head as she slid the drink menu towards Freya, her eyes on the band playing at the center stage, but clearly not focusing on them. Her smile felt weak, but was still there...-
Let's get the first thing out of the way... I'm sorry. I had no right to be mad at you. Or... maybe I did, but you were doing right by me, and you still brought Sakura back to me, and... I dunno. I guess the last year has made me mostly a pain in your ass, and it's gotta stop.
I gotta stop thinking I gotta handle everything on my own.
[Freya listened, her head ever-so-slightly tilted to the side, finger quietly tapping on the table. Freya still felt bad about that whole mess, even if she was sure she wouldn't make another choice. It was... hard, hearing and seeing May like that.]
Yeah, pretty much. [She agreed bluntly on a sigh, leaning back in the booth. It's been a hell of a rocky year between them.] But as long as the ice didn't do any lasting harm, yeah? [Freya started to say something, paused, and glanced towards that same band May was not-really watching.] Look. I wish we could've done that different. I didn't--I don't want to hurt you like that. But you've got a talent for bein' more stubborn than I am, and that's really saying something.
[There's traces of humor in there, softening the criticism. Freya slid the menu back across the table.] Whatever you think I'd like. You know the selection better than I do.
-May opts to go with something suiting the mood, something warm and rich. Well beyond her usual price range, but that was the benefit of her work, after all.-
That stuff is like two grand a bottle, by the way. -Almost bragging.-
[Freya doesn't make a big show of a reaction, but she clearly likes it from how approval passes over her expression in stages. That little tidbit, though, was not nearly as appreciated with the stare that Freya turns to May.]
Why would you tell me that?
[She's making a lot more money with the FD now, but... goddamn, she'll never be able to afford that.]
Because it's not every day you get to feel like a true playa, nah'mean? -May giggled.-
It's on the house. You know me and Majima go way back, so it's no big deal... You and me go way back, too. So I gotta start giving you more respect. I'm sorry.
[Freya looks at the drink, tapping her fingers idly on the table. While May's doling out that kind of generosity (on Majima's behalf), Freya wanted to take advantage of it; this was good shit. At the same time, though... getting drunk was dangerous, now.]
[She should tell May.]
[Freya glances back up with a smile.] So long as we're good, yeah?
[She drums her fingers again, a little faster this time, and takes another drink.] Good thing, too. I've got something to say of my own. Kinda a big deal, though. Dunno if you want to wait until you're off work.
I mean, I just got Majima to give us a high shelf bottle for nothin' so I definitely had better not do that anyways or I'm gonna get my pay docked. -It made sense to her, at least. But there was a definite worried look in her eyes all the same.-
[It was funny, in an almost morbid way, how much easier this has gotten. Freya regardless takes a deep breath in a brief, but still uncharacteristic bit of hesitation.]
Pretty good chance I'm more or less dying. [And just spits it out casually. There wasn't any point to tip-toeing about it.]
-The whole world seemed to stop, at least within the realm of their shared table. The band kept playing, Dizzy Gillespie's "Sunny Side of the Street", a song that was, ironically, about facing all of the darkness of life with overwhelming optimism. But in May's expression, it was nearly impossible to find any of that optimism...-
[More tapping at the table, but this time, there's the barest hint of anxiety to it. It was easier, yes, but all that turmoil was still down there, buried deep away from the surface.]
I've... had this weird thing on my arm for a few weeks, now. It's something that other me had; a curse, kinda. From everything I remember, it's probably gonna turn me into a monster sometime soon. Don't know how long I've got, but I know I've got some time.
Wait. -Probably more forceful than she'd meant for it to be. She raises her finger, a literal stop, before finishing the rest of her drink, letting it come back down heavily onto the table.-
You said you were gonna die, now you're saying you're just gonna change. So which is it?
[Her brow creases, and the corners of her mouth twitch into a scowl.]
Don't you give me that. My past self was obsessed with makin' this thing go away, and I've wracked my brain and a couple others for some magic fix-all ideas. Just 'cause I'm keeping my head on straight doesn't mean I've thrown the fight.
-She wanted to keep arguing... not because she had a point, but because the part of her that was still so petulantly childish wanted to. Because to do otherwise would be to accept what Freya has, that it's an inevitability, and they needed to prepare for it.
May wilted, slumping into her seat... the argument never came.-
[The silence sits heavy between them, and Freya has to fight to keep from reaching for her drink just to do something with it.]
Keep your chin up, yeah? We don't know what'll happen. All those crazy powers I've got showed up way before this thing, and this grand curse of mine's supposed to be the source of all that. Might not work the same, here.

Changing. If you're soulless and mindless you might as well be dead. Kinda worse off, actually.

It sounds to me like you're just giving up.

Didn't mean to be that much of a downer after our little make-up session. Thought you should know.
