CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: May
AGE: Canonly unknown, but she mumbles under her breath something that sounds like "23" when asked about it, so probably that
CANON: Guilty Gear

CANON HISTORY: as a warning, the GG wiki is notoriously blase with spoilers, and the grammar towards the more recent stuff gets questionable at best. Lemme know if you'd prefer something else.
CANON PERSONALITY: The biggest thing of note in May's presentation as a character, and the immediate thing anyone notices, is how childish she is. She has the bounce and energy of youth in just about anything she does, always smiling and always seemingly unbridled in how she approaches life. She jumps in with gleeful enthusiasm to any task, especially if it's in the service of her crew or the man she loves. Very little seems to get her down, worried, or depressed, or even just generally bummed. Which isn't to say it doesn't happen, but it just makes it more important when it does, since her default state is like a kid on a sugar-rush.

May is also intensely loyal, both to Johnny and to her crew. She considers them all family, and despite not being related by blood to any of them, that's very much what they are. Many of May's major decisions in canon are influenced directly by this loyalty and care for them. She jumps into the events of both Guilty Gear and Guilty Gear X because she's worried about Johnny, she's focused completely on rescuing Dizzy (a fellow crew member at the time) in Guilty Gear XX. In Accent Core and early in in Xrd -Sign-, she exiles herself from her crew willingly because she's deeply afraid her status as a Japanese person, and the mysterious condition afflicting her, will put her crew in danger. She doesn't question these actions for even a moment, for better or worse, and almost all of her major actions in the course of the game are influenced by her love and loyalty towards her family.

As a captain/vice-captain, May is far more capable than her childish personality may let on. She is almost hyper-competent as a captain, receiving high praise even from the kings and presidents of the game's cast for her skill as a leader. She guides the Mayship and the Jellyfish crew through many battles in canon, as well as giving complicated orders when needed. At no point is it assumed that Johnny is the more skilled of the two simply because of his age, as the two are pretty much equals in capability and command. At no point does anyone question May's ability as a leader, or at least anyone that knows better. Anyone that does is quickly silenced by how swift and effective she really is as a captain of pirates. Usually while they're being shot out of a cannon.

May's fear of bald people isn't just some unexplained wacky gag in the series. It stems directly from the events of the first game, where her encounter with fellow tournament combatant Dr. Baldhead leaves her mentally scarred. The mad, vicious doctor, with his aforementioned bald head, left a lasting impression on her that she carries years later, even having trouble trusting the redeemed doctor despite him covering up his face/said baldness. This isn't a super important point, but it's worth bringing up since the wiki glosses over it without explanation.

The last major part of May's personality worth mentioning is May's infatuation with Johnny. Johnny was the man who rescued her from life as a war orphan street urchin, gave her a place among the Jellyfish Crew, recognized her skill and power and tenacity despite her youthfulness, named his ship after her, etc.. His impact on her life is undeniable, and that formed in her as a deep seated love for him, both familial and romantic. She desperately wants his affections and approval, almost to a detriment. She compares him to other men in her life pretty constantly, and worries other women might steal him away from her. It's a largely irrational infatuation despite it being built on pretty reasonable levels of gratitude, and Johnny does his best to dissuade it in canon. But it's hard to deny just how crazy she is for him, and if she's capable of forming meaningful romantic relationships outside of him.

SKILLS/ABILITIES: May has two abilities of note in canon. One is that she is just massively, incredibly strong. She fights using a full metal anchor as her weapon and swings it around with relative ease. Her strength is noted as a reflection of her unbridled Ki energy potential, something that becomes a bit of a plot point in the games, given she's Japanese. The upward limit of that strength is never fully explored, but one can figure she can lift several tons worth of weight with little trouble.

Her other ability of note is her apparent skill with marine mammals, having contact with dolphins, whales, and seals. It's not said if this is a magical ability or if she's just Really Good with animals, but it's a definite talent as she can summon all of these animals to help her in battle, and is seen riding on dolphins casually.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: May Sfondi
AU AGE: 23
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Nothing of note. She's still her usual shorty self.

AU HISTORY: May was an orphan, same as canon, of Japanese parentage, and spent most of her young life in the system. Despite the best efforts of the caretakers at the orphanage, May fell into bad habits and rough crowds early on. On one hand, it made her very street smart and tough/hardy. On the other hand, it made her regard for law and authority pretty lax at best and downright absent at worst. It made it very difficult for her to find any kind of home, until the only option left was a boatman with a gambling problem.

Despite this being probably the bare minimum of acceptability, the papers were signed and the orphanage effectively told the man "she's your problem now". Which turned out to be fine. What skills she'd learned as a hoodlum were sharpened by this man, but at no point did he ever directly involve her in anything criminal he did. In fact, he slowed down his wheelin' dealin' ways almost to a halt when she came into her life, only choosing to pass knowledge, for fear that if he were to go to prison again, he'd never see her and she'd be abandoned once more. As much as May wished she could be more, to be a swindling free spirited highwayman like her adopted father was, she respected his wishes.

In his retirement from the thief's game, the man managed to create enough of a pillow of wealth that May had quite a healthy trust in her name to pull from by the time she reached adulthood, using that money to purchase back her adopted father's old boat, which had been christened the Mayship in her honor. From there, she started taking local nautical jobs. Boat tours, small cargo deliveries, anything that could keep her at sea, which she loved for the freedom it seemed to represent. But her hoodlum ways, and the art of the con that her adopted father had raised her with, still stuck with her, and she picked more than a few pockets in her time, even fenced some wrongfully obtained goods, but never enough to draw much attention on herself. In fact, it was barely enough to cover most of the expenses of her adult life. She was starting to wonder... just what sort of life was she meant to live?

Was she going to follow in her adopted father's footsteps and become a truly "free" person of the world, and risk winding up in prison? Or was she going to keep focusing on the life of a boat captain, despite the lack of opportunities there? Or combining them? School seems right out, both in matter of cost and in her lack of a diploma. She remains at that precipice, uncertain of how to continue. She'd been in trouble, but never jail. Her adopted father had been in and out of the system. It feels as if there was some sort of Sword of Damocles hanging over he head, forcing her to make a decision.

AU PERSONALITY: Most all the important points are the same. May is still fiercely loyal to her Jellyfish girls and any other people she's close with. The only major difference is that there is no Johnny in her life, and that factor is missing in terms of her motivations. If a Johnny is apped, they have the option of taking the role of the nameless soul that adopted her, but for now, he's as good as a ghost until she starts to regain memories of him.

Also in this AU, it's probably clear that more of May's focus is on her values of freedom and loyalty to her chosen "family", whatever that family might wind up being. There is no all-girl gang of brigands just yet, though there is a potential for it. In canon, this preference was Johnny's, who tended to rescue the girls of the crew and had a deep seated desire to protect young women. In this AU, it's more May's own compassion, relating to those like her, finding similar veins, and being drawn to people like that and a desire to protect them and guide them. Her compassion comes off a lot more clearer due to her being a bit less childish.

Which isn't to say she's not still youthful or energetic, she can definitely still confuse people into thinking she's a little kid, but given what defines adult responsibilities in this world is different from her canon one, she's toned down on that aspect. In Guilty Gear proper, she could largely get away with being as goofy and kid-like as she could while still being a capable and loyal leader. In this world, she needs to be an 'adult' a bit more often, even if she's an adult who has little concern for the rules.
